Accessibility

Everything here, including tutorials and course material, should be usable by everyone.

The standard

This site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, the standard most universities and public agencies use.

What is in place

  • Every page works with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline and a "skip to content" link.
  • Text and controls meet AA color contrast in both light and dark mode.
  • Animations are turned off for anyone who sets "reduce motion" on their device.
  • The crime map always states its key finding in text, so the point does not depend on seeing colors.
  • Pages are checked automatically for common accessibility errors each time the site is updated.

In progress

  • Reviewed captions on every video, and full transcripts on podcast episode pages.
  • Text descriptions and downloadable data for map views used in course material.

Report a problem
